Cunningham stops Jenkins!

By Bob Ryder at ringside

Veteran Demetrius Jenkins was unable to slow the progress of fellow Detroit native Darryl Cunningham and was stopped via a third round TKO. Time of the ending was 1:33. Cunningham (172) and Jenkins (167 1/2) fought the first two rounds on fairly even terms before Cunningham unloaded on Jenkins along the ropes, sending him crashing to the canvas. Jenkins was in no condition to continue upon rising and saw his record slide to 21-17-1. In winning the main event before a SRO crowd at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, Cunningham improves to 13-2, 6 KO’s.

The co-main event on promoters’ Carlos Llinas Productions (CLIP)/Ron Remus Productions card had Alexis Hloros (156) besting another fading vet in Bernard Harris (160) over the six round limit. All three judges had it 59-55. Hloros’ aggression carried the fight as he moves to 9-2-2, 7 KO’s. Harris declines to 22-23-2 having now lost his last eight fights.

Heavyweight Rich Power (232) out muscled Rick Dufty (214 1/2) and after getting knocked down twice in the second round, Dufty was sufficiently discouraged to stay on his stool between rounds giving Power a TKO 3 victory. Power now 5-0, 5 KO’s. Dufty is 3-3-1.

Mike Walthier (166) spoiled the pro debut of Demetrius Robinson (162 1/2) scoring a standing eight count and a knockdown in winning by TKO 1 at 2:46. Walthier is 3-5, 3 KO’s.

Andres Gorges (143) withstood Mike Fitzgerald’s (144 1/2) early rushing and mauling tactics to score knockdowns in both the first and second rounds leading to a stoppage victory at 2:36 of round two. Gorges goes up to 5-0, 5 KO’s , Fitzgerald down 0-2.

Other results:

James Lester, Jr (137 1/2) UD 4 (40-36, 40-36, 39-37) over Aaron Anderson (131). Lester 8-2, 4 KO’s, Anderson 0-3.

Ali Mansour (248 1/2) UD 4 (all by 40-36) over Cleophris Glover (259). Mansour 2-0, 0 KO’s, Glover 2-9.

Johnathan Jackson (155) UD 4 (40-36, 40-36, 39-37) over Guy Packer (156) 3-21-2. Jackson’s first win evens him up at 1-1.

The show was taped for later broadcast on local FOX Sports Detroit TV. March 20 was the announced date for the next fight card at this venue.
