NABF lightweight champion “Bam Bam” Brandon Rios (24-0-1, 18KOs) of Oxnard, CA, trained by former junior lightweight champ, Robert Garcia is now off Latin Fury 14. Rios suffered a cut, on Wednesday, during sparring and a doctor determined today that the cut is too severe to go on with the bout. Rios was scheduled to take on Urbano Antillon (27-1, 20 KOs) of Maywood, CA on Saturday May 8th in the co-feature bout of Latin Fury 14, which features the return of the “Tijuana Tornado” Antonio Margarito taking on Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (28-2, 21 KOs), in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The 23-year-old Rios was going to defend his NABF lightweight title for the first time.
Brandon Rios – “I’ve been training for over 2 months for this fight and for this to happen with just one week away really pisses me off, I’d fight Antillon today if they’d let me. I’ve never backed down from anyone and I was really looking forward to show everyone how determined I am to become a world champion. I just want to apologize to everyone that was looking forward to this fight, it’ll still happen just not next week and I also want to thank everyone for all their support.”
Robert Garcia/trainer – “It’s an unfortunate thing, Brandon was ready physically and mentally for this fight and I know if it was up to him he’d still fight with that cut that’s the type of fighter he is, but these things happen in boxing. We still have a signed contract so the fight will happen just not on May 8th.”
The rest of the card will continue as scheduled. Latin Fury 14 will be shown live on Pay-Per-View and is being promoted by Top Rank, in association with Zanfer Promotions and Tecate.
