Dawson-Johnson presser!

By Billy “Loops” Luppert

A press conference was held Wednesday at the XL Center in Hartford, CT to announce the highly anticipated November 7th rematch between undefeated two time world title holder “Bad” Chad Dawson of nearby New Haven CT, and former light heavyweight champion “The Road Warrior” Glen Johnson of Miami, FL. HBO will broadcast the event.

Johnson believes he has a score to settle as he gave Dawson the toughest fight of his career, only to lose a unanimous decision by a score of 116-112 on all 3 cards. Many observers felt the fight was closer than that, and Johnson feels it was him that won the fight, and is willing to go to Dawson’s backyard to have another crack at him. Since that night 17 months ago in Tampa, Dawson went on to dominate Antonio Tarver twice while Johnson won 2 fights of his own, but always seemed to have Dawson on his mind. Johnson repeatedly expressed his desire for a rematch with Dawson, and now will finally have a chance to put his money where his mouth is come November 7th.

“It will be a great fight,” said Promoter Gary Shaw.

Both fighters kept it simple when it was their turn to speak at the podium, but neither lacked confidence. Johnson was first to speak, and after thanking everyone involved in the promotion, went on to say “It’s great for the community to come out and support their hometown boy. We’re looking forward to a full house, expecting to see a great fight, because my reputation speaks for itself every time I step in the ring. I always put on a good performance and it’s always going to be a great fight.”

When Dawson came up to speak, he too gave the obligatory thank you’s, and then stated “People said the first fight was close, I don’t know how winning 8 rounds is close, but I beat him before, and I’m going to beat him again. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Dawson’s trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, spoke and said “After 28 fights, you haven’t seen the best Chad Dawson. Let me say that again. After 28 fights, you have not seen the best Chad Dawson.”

Tickets will go on sale on Friday, September 18th with prices ranging from $35-$200. Tickets can be purchased at the XL Center Box Office (Monday-Friday, 12pm-5pm), online at www.xlcenter.com, all Ticketmaster outlets, and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000. HBO will begin its telecast at 9:30pm ET/6:30pm PT.
