DeGale opponent set

By James Slater

2008 Olympic gold medallist and reigning WBC Silver super-middleweight champ James DeGale has his next fight set – against 25-year-old Pablo Farias of Argentina, on March 23rd in Kent – and promoter Mick Hennessey has gone on record as saying he hopes his fighter will land a massive fight against the likes of Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler or Andre Ward in 2013. DeGale-Farias can be seen live on WealthTV and

Speaking with The Daily Mail, Hennessey said, “This is the year when James will be chasing the big names like Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler. Froch knows what it’s like to be avoided because he could never get his dream fight with Joe Calzaghe before he retired. We are hoping he won’t do to James what Joe did to him. It’s a big year him.

“By the end of this year, we are looking to become the mandatory challenger for WBC champion Andre Ward.”

27-year-old southpaw DeGale, 14-1(9) shouldn’t come unstuck against Farias, 24-2(16).

So far in his five-year pro career, Farias has faced just one genuinely world class fighter; being KO’d in the 5th by Arthur Abraham in January of 2012. Farias’ other loss came via DQ when he was thrown out for hitting on the break in the 5th-round of his Nov. 2011 fight with countryman Jose Clavero.

Having won his last five fights, all by stoppage, “Pokemon,” as Farias is nicknamed, has shown some power, but against low-level opposition. Farias has boxed as high as the 187-pound mark and he is listed by Boxrec as a light-heavyweight.

Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
