Denver fight card announced

By Chris Morris/Rocky Mountain Boxing

Steve ‘Match Makin’ Mestas and AirTight Boxing have announced their first show of 2014 and the main event features a highly anticipated rematch. The show will be Friday, February 28th at the Denver Boxing Academy. In the main event Alfred ‘Tornado’ Romero will take on tough as nails Daniel Calzada in a rematch from their bout in 2012. Calzada won a split decision in an all-out war over six rounds. Romero will look to even the score and set up a possible trilogy between the two local pugs.

The undercard has been taking shape, but, with verbal agreements breached and fighters asking to be matched and then getting the matchup they want, only to turn down the fight, it’s been shaken up several times to this point.

Undefeated super middleweight Issac Cardona, 4-0, 4KOs, will look to continue his KO streak as he takes on Zamir Young, 1-2 in a four rounder. Helario Medina, 1-1, will face Chris Galvadon, 1-0 in a four rounder at featherweight. Making his much anticipated pro debut will be Damien ‘Dirt’ Autrey who will face fellow debutant Olson Martinez in a four round bout at welterweight. ‘Dirt’ is trained by the highly respected Donald Camarena from the TLC camp. From the Grudge Training Center LT Nelson will make his boxing debut against Matthew O’Neil, four rounds at jr. middleweight. Nelson is trained under the watchful eye of Trevor Wittman. Also on tap is Alejandro Castillo, also trained by Camarena, against the dreaded TBA.

The doors open at 6:30 with the first bell at 7:30. The Denver Boxing Academy is located at 3540 East 31st Avenue. Tickets are available at all King Soopers and or by calling Steve Mestas at 720-298-1954.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
