Detroit Boxing Action

By Bob Ryder

Boxing returns to suburban Detroit’s Royal Oak Music Theatre on Friday, November 12 with Darryl Cunningham and Rubin Williams squaring off in the 10 round main event for the WBF United States 175 pound title. The careers of the two Motor City combatants have been heading in opposite directions as Cunningham is sporting a nice win streak while Williams has been on the slide as of late, a trend he vows to halt in this bout. Williams has stated, “I will not lose in my hometown!” Cunningham has showed solid improvement in recent outings and is planning on continuing his march towards what he hopes is a world ranking and title shot with a victory over Williams.

In a 10 round supporting contest, undefeated Vernon Paris will take on Ramon Guevara, This is a rematch of a fight the two had in 2007 in which Guevara gave Paris all he could handle before succumbing to a late rounds TKO.

Alexis Hloros will take on Ivan Ledon in a scheduled 8 rounds as the always exciting “Hurricane” seeks to add to his 13 bout win streak. Rich Power returns home from his gutsy effort against Tyson Fury in England to face Deandre McCole in a scheduled 6 rounds.

Local favorites Willie Fortune, Damon McCreary, and Domonique Dolton will showcase their talents in separate contests. Todd Welcome and Alex Otero’s last fight here ended in a unsatisfactory technical draw when Alex injured his ankle and they are matched again to determine a clear winner. Damar Singleton will cross gloves with Chris Grays.

Tickets are available at the Royal Oak Music Theatre box office or at, or by calling 248-399-2980, ext. 3. First bell is 7 PM.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
