Dib Returns March 12th
By Craig Watt
IBF#5 and WBA#12 ranked featherweight Billy “The Kid” Dib (30-1, 18 KO’s) from Sydney, Australia returns to the ring on March 12th with a clash against WBO#5 ranked Lorenzo Villanueva (18- 0, 17KO’s) from the Philippines who is unbeaten in eighteen fights with seventeen wins inside the distance. The fight will be held in Perth, Western Australia and will be for the WBO Oriental Featherweight title, held by Villaneuva. This is a tough fight for the 25 year old Dibb who is on an unbeaten run of ten wins since his loss on points to Steve Leuvano in October 2008.
He spoke to Fightnews today and stated, “This is a tough fight for me as we enter a big year for my development and quest to be world featherweight champion. I want to start off the new year with a fighter who will test me. Villanueva is a hungry fighter from the Philippines who is unbeaten and has won all but one of his fights by knockout. With his WBO#5 ranking it is also an opportunity for me to enhance my world ranking position but I am not looking too far beyond this tough challenge.”
He added, “We are also in preliminary discussions with WBA champion Chris John and have pencilled further meetings to try and bring this exciting fight together for July of this year – in Australia. I am confident this fight will happen and with Chris John such a recognised champion across the world it will be a great fight for Australia. I know Chris will be training in Perth with Craig Christian soon and he has an open invitation to come and watch me in his adopted second home, Perth where I will have my fight with Villaneuva.
“We all know that the people of Perth love their boxing and Danny Green has been their boxing idol for many years and we hope they will come out for an exciting fight on March 12th between two young, hungry and world ranked contenders trying to secure a world title shot in 2011. It will be a cracker of a fight with both of us having everything to gain and lose which will make for such a great fight.”
Dibb believes that following his run of ten wins since his loss to Luevano in 2008 he has developed and matured as a fighter and that 2011 will be his year to secure a 126 pound world championship belt.
“I have developed so much under the guidance of Billy Hussein in the last ten fights that I am confident I can take on all comers in 2011 whether they be Chris John, Yuri Gamboa or Juan Manuel Lopez. If they are looking for an opponent then give me a call – this cocky little kid from Australia is ready to come of age and take on the big guns in 2011, whenever and wherever.”
He continued, “My aim is to get to a high ranking in all the world governing bodies and get myself into a position where these champions have to fight me – where they have no choice and I can show the boxing world that Billy Dib is a serious force at 126 pounds.
“I am excited for a defining year to my career in 2011.”
The fight with Villanueva will be an exciting fight of two contenders who are on collision for the same objective and everything to win and lose.
The venue for the fight on March 12th has yet to be confirmed in Perth, Western Australia.
