Don King hand casting

Last Thursday’s weigh-in for the Ray Austin-Odlanier Solis heavyweight eliminator fight was unique in one concrete detail. In addition to the usual protocol of weighing the fighters and posing for face offs, a little boxing history was preserved.

That’s because promoter Don King met with Florida Boxing Hall of Fame President Walter “Butch” Flansburg and Vice President Sam Cohen afterwards to have his right hand cast in plaster. King, now 79 years young and refocused on his first boxing event since the recent loss of his wife, seemed in high spirits throughout the 40 minute process.

King received his formal induction into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame earlier this year and repeatedly stated his support for the organization in the days leading up to the fight.

King proudly wore his Florida Boxing Hall of Fame ring along with the trademark cache of jewelry he regularly sports.

This was the second time in 3 months the duo performed the casting ceremony. They cast the hand of inductee Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. last October in Kissimmee prior to Wilfredo Jr.’s stirring WBO super bantamweight title defense.
