Don King’s Birthday Wish

Don King is celebrating his 78th birthday today, and his birthday wish is for the California State Athletic Commission to correct the decision made in the Aug. 1 WBO junior welterweight championship featuring Tim Bradley and Nate Campbell in favor of a “no contest” ruling when they meet on Monday. “Everyone, including the referee, saw the accidental head butt between Nate and Timmy in the second round,” King said of what caused a gash over Campbell’s eye that led the ringside physician to recommend a halt to the contest. “Al Bernstein of SHOWTIME, all of the journalists and boxing fans around the world are in agreement the fight should have been ruled no contest after that head butt. Today is my birthday, and my birthday wish is that the CSAC rights this wrong on Monday at their hearing, just as the CSAC rightly corrected itself last year in a similar situation involving Hasim Rahman and James Toney, where they changed the ruling to no decision. I would love nothing more than to call California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday afternoon to tell him that his commission has ruled in favor of justice and fair play. It would be a terrible injustice–as Martin Luther King said ‘an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’–if this wrong is supported. It will be a black eye to boxing, the sport and, most important, the great state of California.”
