Donaire to face Tyson Marquez

The ‘Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire returns to action July 10, taking on Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez of Mexico in Puerto Rico. “Chief trainer Robert Garcia is with Nonito right now in San Leandro (California) where Nonito is training,” said Cameron Dunkin, manager of Donaire. Donaire will defend his interim WBA super flyweight title against Marquez. The Donaire vs. Marquez title fight will be on the same card with world champion Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Bernabe Concepcion. Both fights will be televised by SHOWTIME. Donaire, 27, won the interim WBA super flyweight title in August, 2009, and has made one successful defense. He is unbeaten in world title bouts. Marquez, 21, said it was his grandfather who named him Tyson. “I was an amateur and Pops said I hit as hard as Mike Tyson,” Marquez said.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
