Huck destroys Godfrey
By Karl Freitag
WBO cruiserweight world champion Marco “Käpt’n” Huck (30-1, 23 KOs) overwhelmed challenger Matt Godfrey (20-2, 10 KOs), stopping him in round five on Saturday night at the Messehalle in Erfurt, Germany. The aggressive and powerful Huck was way too strong for Godfrey, dropping Godfrey for the first time at the end of round two. Godfrey was down again in round three after a low blow from Huck, thrown as he punished Godfrey on the ropes. After a one-sided round four, Huck floored Godfrey twice in round five (knocking him through the ropes the second time) and after further punishment, referee Geno Rodriguez waved off the slaughter. Time was 2:18.
In a battle of unbeaten heavyweights, Robert Helenius (13-0, 8 KOs) dismantled Gregory Tony (12-1, 10 KOs) to claim the vacant EU heavyweight championship. The 6’6 “Nordic Nightmare” was impressive as he dropped Tony four times before referee Howard Foster waved it off in round six. Time was :39.
Unbeaten light heavyweight Dustin Dirks (16-0, 11 KOs) again showed his power, knocking out out Sami Selesmaa (4-2, 2 KOs) 2:41 into round two. That’s seven straight KOs for Dirks.
Unbeaten middleweight Dominik Britsch (20-0, 7 KOs) had to work hard to score an eight round unanimous decision over game Lorenzo Cosseddu (23-5-5, 2 KOs). Scores were 77-75, 77-75, 78-75.
Cruiserweight Enad Licina (18-2, 10 KOs) got back on track after his loss to Yoan Pablo Hernandez, taking a clear eight round unanimous decision over veteran Ismail Abdoul (35-18-2, 14 KOs). Scores were 80-72 on all cards. This was a rematch of their 2007 fight, also a W8 for Licina.
Unbeaten middleweight KO Artist Patrick Nielsen (6-0, 5 KOs) needed just 59 seconds to blow away Laszlo Haaz (3-2) in round one.
Unbeaten middleweight Marcos Nader (8-0, 1 KO) stayed unbeaten with an eight round unanimous decision over experienced Kai Kauramaki (17-16, 6 KOs).
