Klitschko TKOs Chagaev!

By Karl Freitag, Alexey Sukachev, Alexey Potapov

IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (53-3, 47 KOs) scored a dominant tenth round TKO over previously unbeaten WBA heavyweight champion in recess Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night in front of 60,000+ at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Klitschko controlled the first round with his jab and dropped Chagaev with a huge right hand in round two. Round three was all Klitschko as he continued to connect with hard shots from long range. Chagaev was game, but was unable to close the distance as Klitschko continued to inflict damage as the rounds progressed. Chagaev landed his best punch of the fight, a right hook, at the end of round seven. Chagaev was cut over the left eye in round eight, another round Klitschko dominated. Klitschko rocked Chagaev in round nine, punishing Chagaev in the corner. The bout was stopped by Chagaev’s corner after the ninth round and was announced as a tenth round KO as the bell had rung to begin round ten before referee Eddie Cotton officially waved it off. Klitschko retained his IBF/WBO/IBO belts. Chagaev’s WBA belt was not at risk.
