Diaz defeats Malignaggi

In a junior welterweight fight (138.5 contract weight) former unified lightweight champ Juan Diaz (35-2, 17 KOs) won a controversial twelve round unanimous decision over former IBF 140lb champ Paulie Malignaggi (26-3, 5 KOs) on Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Malignaggi got off to a good start, but Diaz cut Malignaggi over the left eye with a punch near the end of round one. Diaz volume punching began to work in round two, however he was cut over the left eye in round two from what was ruled a punch. Diaz suffered a second cut over the same eye from an accidental headbutt in round five. Maglignaggi boxed well from long range over the last six rounds, however it was hometown hero Diaz coming away with a 116-112, 115-113, 118-110 win.

Former two-time featherweight champion Robert Guerrero (25-1-1, 17 KOs) won the IBF junior lightweight championship by unanimously outpointing Malcolm Klassen (24-5-2, 14 KOs) over twelve rounds. Guerrero built an early lead and despite a cut over his left eye gave as good as he got when Klassen started coming on midway through the fight. Scores were 117-111, 116-113, 116-112.

In a bout for the vacant NABO middleweight title, the “Golden Child” Daniel Jacobs (18-0, 15 KOs) won a good action ten round unanimous decision over former “Contender” cast member Ishe Smith (21-4, 9 KOs). Smith had some moments, but Jacobs was more than equal to his toughest test. Scores: 96-93, 96-93, 100-89. Referee Laurence Cole deducted a point from Smith for a late hit after round nine.

Lightweight Hylon Williams (11-0, 3 KOs) defeated Baudel Cardenas (18-18-2, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision. Scores: 60-52, 60-52, 59-53.

Junior welterweight Danny Garcia (14-0, 9 KOs) knocked out Oscar Leon (28-10, 18 KOs) at 2:59 of round three.

Welterweight Jermell Charlo (9-0, 4 KOs ) defeated Vardan Gasparyan ( 11-2-4, 5 KOs) by unanimous decision. Scores: 58-56 all three cards.

Junior welterweight Omar Figueroa (7-0, 7 KOs) defeated Jeremy Marts (5-8, 3 KOs) by TKO at 1:54 of round one.

Lightweight Mickey Bey (13-0) defeated Rashad Ganaway (10-2-1) by split decision. Scores: 77-75, 77-75 Bey, 79-76 Ganaway.

Unbeaten junior lightweight Adrien Broner (11-0, 7 KOs) defeated Edgar Portillo (5-3, 4 KOs) by TKO at 1:37 of round one.

Cruiserweight Adam Richards (23-2, 14 KOs) defeated Harvey Jolly (10-10, 4 KOs) by split decision. Scores: 77-74, 76-75 Richards, 78-74 Jolly.

Unbeaten light heavyweight Marcus Johnson (17-0, 14 KOs) defeated Matt Gockel (12-11, 7 KOs) by TKO at 1:37 of round one.

Lighweight Mike Perez (4-0-1, 2 KOs) defeated Jamie Rodriguez (4-6-3, 2 KOs) by unanimous decision. Scores: 40-36 on all cards.

Heavyweight Darlington Agha (1-0, 1 KO) defeated Joseph Rabotte (5-7, 2 KOs) by TKO at 2:32 of round one.
