Unbeaten Frankie Gomez stopped veteran Jaime Orrantia (13-27-5, 4 KO’s) in the first round of a scheduled four round fight. Gomez was on the attack on Orrantia, but the veteran fighter was able to make Gomez missed. Although he tried to counter, Orrantia would miss, allowing Gomez (4-0, 4 KO’s) to go back on the attack. Gomez landed a right uppercut, sending Orrantia back against the ropes, prompting referee Pat Russell to stop the fight. Orrantia was not visibly hurt, prompting some in the crowd to boo the stoppage.
Featherweight Gary Russell (10-0, 7 KOs) impressively stopped Rodrigo Aranda (8-13-2, 2 KOs) in the second round of a scheduled six round bout. Russell was on the attack from the beginning, landing hard left hands to the head. An overhand left dropped Aranda in the first round. Aranda bravely survived the round, but was dropped by two vicious body shots in the second round, prompting referee Pat Russell to stop the bout at 34 seconds.
Welterweight Jessie Vargas remained unbeaten, slowly breaking down game southpaw Ernesto Zavala (21-5, 9 KO’s) to earn a sixth round stoppage victory. Vargas (11-0, 6 KO’s) dropped Zavala with a right-left combination to the head in the first round. Zavala fought back, but did not have the firepower to keep up with his younger opponent. Vargas charged out to open the sixth, landing vicious shots, prompting referee Jack Reiss to stop the bout at 33 seconds.
Junior Welterweight Jamie Kavanagh (2-0, 1 KO) won a four round unanimous decision over Luis Sanchez. Kavanagh landed the more telling blows over a game Sanchez (0-2). All three judges scored the bout in favor of Kavanagh, with scores of 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37.
Junior middleweight Roberto Reyes (2-0, 2 KOs) scored a first round TKO over Clint Coronel (3-1-1, 1 KO). The bout was stopped between rounds on a cut.
