SHOWTIME’s acclaimed Super Six World Boxing Classic continued Saturday as undefeated Olympic gold medalist Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (21-0, 13 KOs) scored an eleventh round technical decision over WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. Ward had the perfect game plan as he surprisingly dominated Kessler, whose face was busted up by unintentional headbutts and punches. Scores were 97-93, 98-92, 98-92.
Jose Celaya, (31-6, 16 KOs), continued his slow decline from one-time contender, losing a unanimous decision to unheralded Tony Hirsch, (10-3-1, 5 KOs), 40-36 on all three scorecards in a four-round junior middleweight bout.
Local fighter Karim “Hard Hitta” Mayfield, (11-0-1, 7 KOs), lived up to his nickname, stopping Francisco Santana, (11-2, 5 KOs), at 2:27 of round five in a scheduled eight-round junior middleweight bout.
Young prospect Stan Martyniouk, (8-0, 1 KO), had an easy time of it with journeyman Anthony Martinez, (21-33-3, 9 KOs), taking a unanimous decision in a four-round lightweight bout, 40-36 on all three scorecards.
In the evening’s opening bout, junior lightweight Mel Crossty, (4-0-1, 1 KO), cruised to a four-round unanimous decision over Carlos Herrera, (2-3, 1 KO). Scores were 39-36, 40-35, 40-35, with Crossty scoring a knockdown in the opening stanza.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
