Cuban rising stars Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis and Erislandy Lara were all victorious on Friday night at Terrible’s Primm Valley Casino Resorts in Primm, Nevada. Unbeaten WBC #2, WBA #3, WBO #6, IBF #8 featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (13-0, 11 KOs) scored a tenth round TKO over Roger “Speedy” Gonzalez (27-3, 18 KOs). Gonzalez briefly dropped Gamboa in round two, but the knockdown only served to wake up the heavy-handed Gamboa, who was right back on the offensive and dominated the bout until referee Robert Byrd rather suddenly stopped the bout with :48 remaining in the final stanza. Gamboa’s, who was a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, is expected to fight for the WBC interim featherweight championship in his next bout.
WBC #12 heavyweight Odlanier “La Sombra” Solis (13-0, 9 KOs) defended his WBC international title with an eighth round TKO over 6’6 “Big Man” Kevin Burnett (13-2-1, 8 KOs). Solis, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, showed glimpses of his talent in short bursts throughout the bout before finally rocking Burnett with a left hook in the eighth prompting referee Jay Nady to wave it off. Time was 2:00.
Hot junior middleweight prospect Erislandy Lara (3-0, 2 KOs) scored an impressive first round KO over Rodrigo Aguiar (5-4, 3 KOs). Lara floored Aguiar with a straight left just before the bell and referee Joe Cortez ruled Aguair was in no condition to continue. Lara was the 2005 world amateur champion.
