Juanma stops Penalosa!

WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel ‘Juanma’ Lopez (25-0, 23 KOs) scored a brilliant ninth round TKO over WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KOs) on Saturday night at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Lopez was superb as he outpunched a very motivated Penalosa for nine brutal rounds. Penalosa’s trainer Freddie Roach stopped the fight between rounds nine and ten. Lopez has now scored 13 consecutive knockouts.

Jr welterweight Lamont Peterson (27-0, 13 KOs) claimed the WBO interim title when Willy Blain (20-1, 3 KOs) suffered a hand injury and was unable to go on in round seven. Time was 1:47.

In a scheduled 4 round cruiserweight bout 6 foot 6 inch Carlos Negron (2-0, 2 kos) stopped veteran Tyler Hughes (23-25, 8 KOs) in round 1 with an expolisive knockout that had the crowd on their feet. Negron knocked Hughes down and the game Huges beat the count but was in no condition to continue and his corner mercifully stopped the fight.

Juan Mercedes (23-2, 16 KOs) defeated Anthony Napunyi (14-5, 7 KOs) by TKO in round 6th in a super bantamweight bout. Mercedes was systematically breaking down Napunyi prior to the stoppage prompting Napunyi’s cornerman to stop the fight between rounds 6 and 7.

In a bout between bantamweights , David Quijano (9-1-1, 6 KOs) unanimously decisioned Jesus Martinez (18-6, 11 KOs) over 8 rounds by the scores of 79-73 and 78-74 twice.

In an exciting Junior welterweight bout Erick Cruz (6-2-2, 6 KOs) recovered from a body shot knockdown to return the favor to Max Rivera (8-2, 4 KOs)in the same round. When Rivera arose he was still hurt from the body shot and Cruz finished him off with a serious of head shots that sent Rivera stumbling all over the ring and the referee correctly stopped the fight in round 5 of their scheduled 6 round bout.

Orlando Felix (11-1, 4 KOs) badly hurt Luis Daniel Colon (4-7, 2 KOs) in round 1 of their scheduled 6 round Junior welterweight contest. Felix finished the job in round 2 as he trapped Colon in the corner and unleashed a barrage of punches promptiong the referee to stop the bout.

Jorge Melendez (8-0-1, 8 KOs) extended his knockout streak to 8 in a row as he defeated Carlos Pena (5-20-2, 4 KOs)in their scheduled 6 round junior middleweight bout. Pena’s corner signaled with towel for the referee to stop the fight round 4 as Pena was shaken by a series of Melendez punches.

Christopher Rivera (3-1, 3 KOs) delivered an electrifying knockout of Nelson Casanova (1-1, 1 KO)in round 1 of their scheduled 4 round featherweight bout. Rivera dropped Casnova 3 times in the first found but the third was had Casanova out for a few mintues on the canvas as he was counted out. Casanova fortunately did awake and leave the ring under his own power.

In the opening bout of the evening Andres Navarro (4-3-1, 4 KOs) stopped Enrique Quinonez (4-9-1, 0 KOs) in the 3rd round of their scheduled 4 round junior welterweight bout.
