Kirkland stops Julio!

In a highly anticipated clash of junior middleweight KO Artists, unbeaten James Kirkland (25-0, 22 KOs) stopped Joel Julio (34-3, 31 KOs) after six brutal rounds at ther HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Kirkland pressed the action in round one cutting Julio over the right eye. Julio began to connect more in round two, but it was still Kirkland applying pressure. Huge sustained exchange in round three in which both fighters survived. Kirkland’s pressure seemed to be paying dividends as a busted up Julio wore down over the next few rounds. Kirkland walked through Julio’s big punches as he continued to break Julio down. The bout was stopped at the end of round six.

Junior welterweight Victor Ortiz (24-1-1, 19 KOs) scored a second round TKO over “Mighty” Mike Arnauotis (21-3-1, 10 KOs). Ortiz rocked Arnauotis with a straight left and got the stoppage with his follow-up attack. Time was 1:27.

The junior lightweight clash between Robert Guerrero (23-1-1, 16 KOs) and Daud Yordan (17-0, 12 KOs) ended in a no decision after former IBF featherweight world champion and local hero Guerrero was cut over the right eye by an unintentional headbutt in round two. Time was 1:47 of ther second when it was stopped.

In a wild battle between undefeated welterweight prospects “Hard Hitta” Mayfield, (8-0-1, 5 KOs), escaped rugged Mexican Mario Lozano, (6-1, 5 KOs) by a narrow unanimous decision, 56-55, 56-55, and 57-54. Lozano scored a second round knockdown before Mayfield stepped up his attack and knocked down Lozano in rounds four and six. Mayfield was also penalized a point for hitting Lozano after the fourth round knockdown.

Charles Huerta improved his record to 9-0, 5 KOs, with a controversial split decision over unheralded Andres Ledesma, (15-12-1, 10 KOs). Two judges scored the bout for the more aggressive Huerta, 59-55 and a questionable 60-54, while the third judge awarded the more accurate Ledesma with a 58-56 score.

Heavyweight Seth Mitchell, (10-0-1, 7 KOs), crushed Joseph Rabotte, (3-5, 1 KO) at 1:19 of the first round. Mitchell put Rabotte out on his feet against the ropes with a big right hook, then dropped him with another right hook before the referee could jump in and save him.

Local prospect Eloy Perez, (13-0-2, 3 KOs) knocked down Gabe Garcia, (5-6-1, 1 KO) once in the third round, then finished him off one round later when the referee jumped in to protect Garcia from taking further punishment at 2:26 of round four in a scheduled six-round super featherweight bout.

Sharp-looking youngster Luis Ramos, (10-0, 5 KOs), cruised past durable journeyman Anthony Martinez, (21-29-3, 9 KOs), in a four-round lightweight bout, 40-35, 40-36, 40-36.

A scheduled four-round super featherweight bout between Mike Perez, (2-0-1, 2 KOs), and Andres Reyes, (1-1-1, 0 KOs) was stopped after one round due to a cut over Perez’s left eye caused by an unintentional headbutt. The bout was ruled a technical draw.

Junior welterweight Karl Dargan, (3-0, 1 KO), stopped Sergio Orantes, (0-1), by TKO at 2:15 of round two.
