Light heavyweight prospect Alfonso “El Tigre” Lopez, 19-0 (14 KOs), takes on veteran Rubin Williams, 29-9-1 (16 KOs), on Thursday at the Humble Civic Center on the outskirts of Houston. The bout, scheduled for 10 rounds, will be staged by Rock Solid Promotions. Since turning pro in 2007, Lopez, 28, has averaged a fight every two months and gradually upped the caliber of his competition. Williams has faced some of the best fighters in the 168-175 range including Jeff Lacy, Andre Ward, Chris Henry, Allen Green and Antwun Echols. But having lost his last seven bouts, Williams,34, is more of a stepping stone than a fringe contender at this juncture. Still, he remains Lopez’ most experienced opponent to date.
On the undercard:
Female junior featherweight Johanna Mendez, 6-0-1 (2 KOs), faces Christina Ruiz, 5-2 (3 KOs). Heavyweight Darlington Agha, 2-0 (2 KOs) takes on Ross Brantley, 2-15-1, of Dallas. Lightweight Alicio Castaneda, 9-1 (5 KOs), of Galveston squares off against Oscar Roville, 1-3-1 (1 KO). Junior middleweight Fernando Castaneda, 6-5 (3 KOs), of Mexico takes on Deon Nash, 5-12 (1 KO). And Ashley Alvarado and Maria Ruiz make their pro debuts against each other in a junior bantamweight bout.
