Emanuel Steward’s passing confirmed

Extremely sad to report that legendary trainer Emanuel Steward has passed away today at the age of 68. Manny underwent surgery for an undisclosed stomach disorder in September and had been hospitalized since. There were conflicting reports on the condition of Steward, but the Steward family has now issued a statement confirming the great man’s passing.

Earlier today during the ongoing WBO Convention, WBO President Francisico “Paco” Valcarcel called for a moment of silence. Valcarcel recalled Steward’s training seminar in last year’s convention in Puerto Rico. Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko also issued a statement.

Steward is perhaps best remembered as the legendary founder of the Kronk Gym and the trainer of Hall of Famer Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns, as well as his work with heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. He was also a frequent commentator on HBO Boxing. Emanuel Steward was extremely knowledgable, always friendly, and will be greatly missed by everyone here at Fightnews.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
