In 25 years of boxing promotions, promoter Roy Englebrecht has only signed a handful of boxers to promotional agreements, but in 2009 he has already signed two. This past February he signed Oxnard welterweight Hugo Centeno Jr. to a six bout agreement, and today he announced today the signing of Santa Ana lightweight prospect Robert Vargas.
Vargas is undefeated at 3-0-1 and in his short 18 month pro career has already won two championship belts! Only 22 years old, Vargas won his first belt on March 6th beating Luis Cervantes for the Marconi Belt, and on May 14th topped Edgar Portillo for the NAIOP Belt. What was impressive and one of the reasons Englebrecht signed him, was that he won both bouts by unanimous decision over fighters who were 4-1 and 7-4.
“Robert has shown me some great skill at a very young age, as he is beating guys with a lot more experience,” said Englebrecht. “He is also managed by Robert W. Lewis III who I greatly respect for the professional way he does business. Plus is doesn’t hurt that Robert is from Santa Ana, and will bring 50 people to see him fight on my Marriott shows.”
Vargas is slated to fight a four rounder on the Battle In The Ballroom show on August 27th. Centeno who hurt his hand in his pro debut KO win at the Marriott in April is close to returning to the ring.
