The list of current or former world boxing champions who have made their pro debuts at the Irvine Marriott’s Battle In The Ballroom is impressive….Genaro Hernandez, Johnny Tapia, Carlos Famoso Hernandez, Mike Anchondo, and Sergio Mora to name a few. Now promoter Roy Englebrecht believes he has another champion in the making, and announced today that he has signed Hugo “The Boss” Centeno Jr to a promotional contract. Centeno, out of the Centeno’s Boxing Gym in Oxnard, will make his USA pro debut at the Irvine Marriott’s Battle In The Ballroom on Wednesday, April 8th.
“As a club promoter you don’t very often have the opportunity to sign a great amateur boxer, as they are normally sweep up by the big guys” said Englebrecht. “But I feel very fortunate that Hugo and his manager Robert Lewis III have chosen to sign a seven bout promotional contract with me, and that I can help launch his pro career. Hugo has all the tools, both inside and outside the ring, to achieve greatness….a great work ethic, great amateur experience, a great smile, and a great attitude.”
Centeno, who is trained by his father Hugo Centeno Sr, is a senior at Oxnard High School, and as an amateur compiled a impressive 90-10 record. He is a former Jr. Olympics Champion, National Silver Gloves Champion, National PAL Champion, Junior Gold Gloves Champion, and five time California amateur champion.
“The feeling is surreal and exciting all at the same time” said Centeno, about signing with Roy Englebrecht Promotions. I feel blessed because not a lot of people get to say that they are professional athletes. Being part of Roy Englebrecht’s promotions company is a dream come true and the fight fans at Roy’s shows can always expect a great performance from me. I will earn their respect and become the people’s choice.”
