Estrada; Barbosa top Rhode Island card

2004 United States Olympic heavyweight Jason Estrada returns to the ring for the first time since January on Friday, December 9th at the West Warwick Civic Center in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Estrada, 31, is looking to get back into the win column after two tough defeats at the hands of world rated heavyweight contender Franklin Lawrence and former world light heavyweight and world cruiserweight champion, Tomasz Adamek. This will be his first bout since elbow surgery.

“The elbow feels great,” said Estrada, 16-4, 4 KO’s. “The injury has been there for most of my career. I tried to fight through it but after the last fight I knew that I had to get it fixed.”

For Estrada this will be his first fight back in Rhode Island since November 2008 when he defeated former heavyweight contender Derrick Bryant.

“I can’t wait to fight in front of my hometown fans,” said Estrada, who hails from nearby Providence. “I trained hard and I am ready for the 9th. I want to put on a good show and hopefully be back here fighting early in 2012.”

Estrada will be featured in the 8 round main event against upset minded Joseph Rabotte of Myrtle Beach, SC. Despite a deceiving record of 11-18-1, 3 KO’s, Rabotte is known as a tough opponent and holds wins over Taurus Sykes, 25-5-1, and prospect Jesse Oltmanns, 10-1, whom he defeated this past June.

“We are definitely not looking past Rabotte,” said Estrada. “I know he comes to fight. He’s fought some tough guys and defeated them, so I know he is coming to Rhode Island to beat me. But I am ready.”

Also featured on the show, in a six round bout, will be comebacking former USBA & NABO middleweight champion Brian Barbosa, 29-6, 21 KO’s, who will step into the ring for the first time since 2003. Barbosa, 38, originally fought out of Providence, RI but now lives and fights out of Cape Cod, MA. He will take on New England Light Heavyweight champion Joe Gardner, 35, 7-3-1, 1 KO, of Woonsocket, RI.

Former New England title challenger Keith Kozlin, 6-2-1, 4 KO’s, looks to get back in the win column against comebacking undefeated prospect Angel Camacho, 11-0, 4 KO’s. This will be Camacho’s first bout since 2008.

Rounding out the eight bout card will be bouts featuring female prospect Kali Reis, 2-1-1, 1 KO, Providence, RI, lightweight Joseph “Chip” Perez, Hartford, CT, 5-1, 2 KO’s, junior middleweight Dustin Reinhold, Fall River, MA, 4-1, 2 KO’s, Paul Gonsalves, Harwich, MA, 2-2, 2 KO’s and pro debut junior welterweight Jair Ramos, Waterbury, CT.

The event is being present by Big Six Entertainment in association with Narragansett Beer. Tickets priced at $35, $45, $55 and $75 are available by calling (401) 241-3490. Tickets will also be available at the door.
