Evander Holyfield takes heat for remarks he made on British reality show

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has been given a warning to not repeat comments he made on the British reality show “Celebrity Big Brother.” In the show, Holyfield is handcuffed to 26-year-old actress Luisa Zissman, and the pair got into a conversation about gay boxers.

Zissman: I think it’s really bad that no one stands up and says it in the sports industry.
Holyfield: “What would be good about it?
Zissman: I think it’s good to be open like that because it’s normal.
Holyfield: But that ain’t normal.

Holyfield later stated: The Bible lets you know there’s wrong, there’s right.
Zissman: That’s just the way some people are born.
Holyfield: No, it don’t make no difference. If you were born and your leg were turned this way, what do you do? You go to the doctor and get it fixed back right.

Holyfield was later given a televised dressing down by the producers for “unacceptable language and behavior,” but allowed to stay on the show with a warning “to consider very carefully the effect expressing such views may have and the harm and offense you may cause by repeating these views inside the house.”

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
