Ex-WBA champ Sakata tops Jun!

By Joe Koizumi

Former WBA flyweight champ Takefumi Sakata (34-5-2, 15 KOs), 114.75, returned to action after his forfeiture of the WBA 112-pound belt via second round annihilation by Thailander Denkaosen Kaowichit on the last day of the previous year, and pounded out a unanimous decision (97-94, 99-92 and 99-91) over Korean titlist Jinman Jun, 115, over ten on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan. Sakata made a slow start as usual, but finished warming up his engine in the fourth and swept all rounds thereafter by battering the durable Korean upstairs and downstairs. Sakata says, “I’ll try to win back the world belt either in the 112-pound or 115-pound category.” Promoter: Kyoei Promotions.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
