Fight Club OC Results

By Miguel Maravilla at ringside

Roy Englebrecht Promotions returned for the second time this year to the Hangar at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California Thursday night for Fight Club OC. In the main event, super lightweight Carlos Morales (2-1-3) of Highland Park convincingly won a four round unanimous decision over Tustin’s Paul Velarde (3-4-3).

Early on in the opening round, Morales tagged Velarde with a right hand that stunned Velarde as he clinched and held on to Morales who continued to punch as Velarde was saved by the bell. In round two both traded away on the inside fighting in the center of the ring. A right hand by Morales knocked down Velarde in round three as Morales continued to punch away but Velarde showed toughness continuing to fight hard all the way to the final bell. In the end all three judges scored it 40-35.

Riverside’s Rashad Hughes stopped Beto Ibarra Jr. of Santa Ana in three rounds. The southpaw Hughes was the much faster fighter and in round two Hughes put Ibarra on the canvas with a one-two combination. In the following round a left by Hughes dropped Ibarra once again. Shortly after Hughes followed up with his attack connecting with a right to the body as referee Jack Reiss stopped the bout at 2:50 of the third round.

The ladies were also in action at the Hangar as Nadya Ropac of La Habra won a unanimous decision over San Francisco’s Laura Deanovic. In the opening round Ropac came out firing away with quick hands. Working off the jab it seemed that Ropac was mainly throwing the left along with an occasional right in cruising to a unanimous decision win. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 in favor of Nadya Ropac as she wins her professional debut and goes to 1-0.

In the opening bout of the night, Santa Ana’s Jesus Gutierrez won a majority decision over Noe Lucas of San Jose. The two battled it out the four round distance and the judges scored the bout 38-38, 39-37 and 40-36 as Jesus Gutierrez wins his first pro fight and goes to 1-1.

In heavyweight action, Jonathan Hamm scored a third round TKO over Kevin Howard. A crushing right hand sent Howard to the canvas. Howard got up but Hamm continued his attack as referee Jack Reiss stopped the contest at 1:21 of the third round. Jonathan Hamm improves his record to 6-1, 5 KOs.

Making their pro debuts, cruiserweights Malanga D’Hue and Jamel Reynolds traded away in going the distance. D’hue used the jab and circled as Reynolds landed some solid shots. In round three, a flurry of punches wobbled Reynolds. In the fourth and final round Dhue continued to punch away on Reynolds, Dhue boxed and used his jab en route to a victory as two judges scored the bout 40-36 and the third judge had it 39-37 for Malanga D’Hue as he wins his pro debut and goes to 1-0.

It was a sellout crowd at the Hangar with 1,482 were on hand. Fight Club OC returns to the Hangar Thursday June 6.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
