Formerly WBO world rated Mark “Bam Bam” Flanagan (16-4, 10 KOs) outscored Daniel Ammann (29-7-1) over twelve rounds via split decision to capture the Australian cruiserweight crown at the Entertainment Centre, Townsville, Queensland, Australia on Saturday. Flanagan was on the canvas in round eight compliments of a low blow. Scores Phil Austin 95-96, Allan Burford 97-93, Chris Condon 97-95. The 23-year-old Flanagan holds a 2012 stoppage win over former world rated Kariz Kariuki. Ammann was coming off an unsuccessful Commonwealth title challenge against Tony Conquest in London last February.
In the main supporting bout, former Australian super bantamweight champion Jason “Nugget” Cooper (10-2-1, 5 KOs) clearly outpointed Filipino Robert Lerio (16-19-1) over eight rounds by scores of 79-73, 78-73, 77-75 Cooper unsuccessfully challenged for the WBC Youth 122lb title being outpointed by Qui Xiao Jun in Haikou, China.
Welterweight Zorran Cassady (1-0) outpointed Arron Yuchareon over four round via majority decision by scores of 39-37, 40-36, 38-38.
In other action, light middleweight Kolby Johnston (1-0, 1 KO) stopped Thai Pramooi Boonpok (0-6) in round one of a scheduled four. Boonpok had taken London Olympian Cameron Hammond the distance on two occasions in 2014.
Southpaw light middleweight Ryan Heck (5-1-1) scored a shutout over Dean Purdon (0-1) in a four round bout by 40-36 across the board.
Welterweight Dean Thomas (1-0) scored a shutout over Thai, Paltoon Jaikom (1-6) in a four round bout by scores of 40-36 on all cards. Jaikom was coming off a ten round points loss to Ben Capps in a WBC regional championship bout on May 16.
