WBO NABO light heavyweight champion Andrew “Polish Prince” Fonfara (20-2, 12 KO) needed just three rounds in his scheduled for ten round bout against Phill Williams (11-5, 10 KO) to boost his impressive record as a light heavyweight to eight fights and eight KOs. Fonfara knocked out Williams after just 1:25 of round number three. “We knew that Phil can hit, so I decided to be aggressor, don’t let him set his punches up,” said Fonfara after his fight in front of around 2,800 mostly Polish fans in UIC Pavillion in Chicago.
“He hit me hard, maybe once or two, but I knew that I can attack behind my double jab anytime I want. After the second round, my trainer Sam Colonna asked me to use my left hand more aggressively. Knowing that Williams is afraid of my right hand power, I did a little fake, and he stepped directly into my left hook. Right cross just finished the fight,” said the 24-year-old, ranked currently by WBO at #8.
None of Fonfara’s eight KOs went past seventh round. Talking about Fonfara’s future, his promotor refuted the English “Daily Mail” story, that Fonfara will fight on February 25 in Cardiff against WBO titleholder Nathan Cleverly. “Nobody from Cleverly’s camp contacted us about fighting Fonfara. I did not have one conversation about Andrew.”
