Former Aussie champ killed

By Craig Watt

Former Australian Heavyweight champion Vince Cervi was shot dead in Preston, Melbourne, Australia last night after an altercation ended in his shooting. The 41 year old Cervi retired in 1997 from the sport after being Australian Heavyweight Champion in 1995 when he secured the title with a third round stoppage of James Grima in Melbourne. Inside the ring he is perhaps best known for his fight with Joe Bugner in September 1995 when he lost a twelve round decision to the former world heavyweight title challenger. This fight was the first in Bugner’s comeback after over 8 years in retirement. He also fought infront of 38,000 fans in 1992 on the undercard of the Jeff Fenech V Azumah Nelson bout in Melbourne when he drew with Steve Hudson. When paramedics arrived at the scene they tried to revive him but he died soon after their arrival. A man has been charged with his murder.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
