Herbert “The Hawk” Hlubi a former Transvaal and South African light heavyweight champion who fought from 1955 to 1971 passed away in Alexander near Johannesburg recently. Hlubi who had a reported record of 29-14-1; 16 made his pro debut in 1955 and won the Transvaal middleweight title when he outpointed Ariel Xaba over ten rounds and captured the vacant South African light heavyweight title in December 1961 when he beat Victor Lekaye in Cape Town.
After six successful defences of the title he lost it to Johannes “Kid Walcott” Mahlangu in March 1971. The talented Hlubi then lost to Fraser Memela on a disqualification and stopped Remington Dyanti in the fourth round. In his last fight before hanging up his gloves he was knocked in the second round by John Nyalunga on May 22, 1971 in Springs.
