Full Report: Pacquiao-Marquez LA Presser

By Miguel Maravilla

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38KOs) of the Philippines and Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) will meet for the fourth time on December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A three day international press tour kicked off Monday at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Welcoming everyone in attendance at the press conference was Top Rank president Todd duBoef.

“On December 8 we will see the fourth match between these two legends,” duBoef said. “Earlier they said to me do you think the consumer wants to see a fourth fight? Is it going to be hard to sell a fourth fight?”

“I said wait a minute, have you seen the first 36 rounds?”

He also mentioned other notable rivalries with fighters having faced each other four or more times. From Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Jake LaMotta, Willie Pep vs. Sandy Sadler, Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Gene Fullmer, Bobby Chacon vs. Bazooka Limon, Azumah Nelson vs. Jesse James Leija and most recently Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez.

Zanfer Promotions President Fernando Beltran, Marquez’ co-promoter spoke to the media shortly after on the magnitude of what has become one of boxing’s best rivalries. “We are happy that this fight is taking place, I think this is one of the best matches you can make because of the styles they match each other tremendously they have proved it in the past three fights. It will be a very interesting fight may the best man win.”

Trainer Freddie Roach who will have to once again plan out a strategy also spoke. “This is the fourth time now, a fight I have had to get Manny ready for three times. They have all been close fights, it’s a good fight. These are two of the best I can’t wait to get started,” Roach said.

Then it was time for the fighters to speak as Juan Manuel Marquez welcomed everyone in attendance speaking in English.

“This fight that I have is a challenge most importantly is that Manny Pacquiao knows me and I know him this is a great fight,” Marquez told media.

“I want to prove who is better and I want the referee to raise my hand…I’m training very hard for December 8. I’ll be ready to fight and I’ll be ready to win again. I didn’t like the judges’ decision because everyone knows what happened in the last three fights,” Marquez said in closing.

His opponent Manny Pacquiao followed as he talked about his December rematch with Marquez.

“I am happy that I am fighting Marquez again. There are many saying that I won the last fight no doubt and Marquez is saying that he won, I think there is something wrong,” Pacquiao said to media.

“December 8 is going to be a good fight I need to make this fight short. I want to erase the doubt in the minds of the fans so I want to show the old Manny Pacquiao when I was 24 or 25 years old, the hungry Manny Pacquiao fighting in the ring.”

One-on-One Quotes:

Manny Pacquiao: “We don’t want to underestimate Marquez. My focus is to make the fight short, the style of Marquez I know how to fight. My concern is how to make people happy on my performance.”

“Why fight Bradley? It was a one sided fight, what do I need to prove? Everyone knows what happened in that fight, I would consider fighting Bradley later on.”

“I chose to fight him again because of the doubts everyone has about the last three fights. With Marquez it will be an exciting fight, expect a very good fight from me.”

Juan Manuel Marquez: “I am happy to have that fourth opportunity. We shall show that emotion up in the ring come fight night.”

“I saw a different fight then what the judge’s saw when Pacquiao fought Bradley I think Pacquiao won. Who knows why there was no rematch between them two. It’s business.”

“What’s most important is that we will have our fourth meeting which is good for the fans in which we will give a tremendous fight.”
