Garth Somers, former boxing promoter from Winnipeg, passed away earlier this week at St. Boniface Hospital of lung cancer. Somers had been involved in the local pro boxing scene throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s with boxers Mark Riggs, Brooke Wellby, Terry Jesmer and many others. He once promoted a show with former heavyweight Frank “Gator” Lux in Rapid City, South Dakota that made almost $800, but unfortunately, Garth had to donate the profit to Lux’ hospital bills after the local star suffered a broken jaw in his main event bout against Vampire Johnson. He claimed it was the only time he turned a profit in boxing. “Garth was a real character and a good friend to a lot of fighters,” said Lux. “He was a real stand up guy.”
