Geale, Dibb headline

By Craig Watt

A big Australian boxing card has been announced for June 2nd at the Entertainment Centre in Wollongong, New South Wales with many of the countries top boxers appearing on the same card, televised live on Fox Sports. The main event sees IBF #7 and WBO #10 ranked Middleweight Daniel Geale (22-1, 13 KOs) from Tasmania take on Australian Contender finalist Kariz Kariuki (21-8-2, 18 KOs) over twelve rounds for the IBF Pan Pacific title with the main supporting bout being IBF #6 ranked featherweight Billy “The Kid” Dib (26-1, 14 KOs) taking on Ivan Hernandez (26-4-1, 16 KOs) from Mexico for the vacant IBF Pan-Pacific title over twelve rounds.

The 27-year-old Mexican has mixed with high class opponents and was the WBO super flyweight champion in 2004 when he stopped Mark Johnson in eight rounds, only to lose his title to Fernando Montiel by stoppage defeat in seven rounds in 2005. He is 4-1 in his last five bouts and should provide a solid challenge to the 24-year-old Dib from Sydney who is targeting IBF champion Cristobal Cruz in 2010.

Former world title challenger and 37-year-old veteran Shannan Taylor (49-8-3, 35 KO’s) returns from retirement to take on Ben Costello (6-3-1, 4 KOs) over eight rounds.

Also pencilled to appear is top prospect Junior Talipeau (14-1-1, 5 KOs) in a return grudge match with former WBA 168 pound challenger Nadar Hamden (42-7-1, 18 KOs). Their last fight ended in the first round in December when a clash of heads led to a technical draw at 1:03 of the first round after Talipeau had dropped him to the canvas and appeared set for an early knockout win.

Australian Contender winner Garth Wood is also set to appear over eight rounds in a warm up fight before he takes on WBA #1 ranked middleweight and two time WBA 168 pound champion Anthony Mundine as his prize of winning the series on Fox 8.
