WBA/IBO Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) of is two weeks away from his showdown against Matthew “Mack the Knife” Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) . The champion held a press conference Tuesday afternoon at the Le Petit Greek Restaurant in Los Angeles as he talked about his upcoming fight with Macklin on HBO Boxing After Dark which takes place June 29 from the MGM Grand Theatre at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

“I’m excited to return to the United States and once again fight on HBO against Matthew Macklin,” said Golovkin. “I look forward to fighting on June 29. I feel great. It’s a difficult fight maybe the first seven rounds,” he added.

Golovkin has been training in the high altitude mountain community of Big Bear, California since April 1 working with trainer Abel Sanchez in preparation for Matthew Macklin. Sanchez who has trained the likes of former champions Terry Norris and Miguel Angel Gonzalez, gave his take on Golovkin’s preparation, “It has gone well. He came in at 167 which allows us to work on technique. He has given me opportunities to do more. If he had to fight tomorrow he would be ready.”

Helping out “GGG” as his main sparring partner to adapt to Macklin’s style is Russian light heavyweight Dennis Grachev (13-1, 8KOs), who like Golovkin had a long amateur career. “Training camp is great, running, sparring. It’s hard and it’s good” Golovkin stated.

For the 31-year-old Kazak star he knows he has a challenge in the rugged Macklin. “I think he is good, he has power, good condition, and very physical, but I think my style is better,” Golovkin told “We are both physical this be a great fight.”

The current focus for “GGG” is the tough Englishmen Matthew Macklin, however if he gets a win over Macklin, watch for Golovkin to have more opportunities as he looks to take on other titlists in the middleweight division.

Expect Golovkin to be at his finest June 29 as he looks to further establish himself as an international boxing star. He is media friendly definitely has the personality, and charisma. When asked by on what to expect on his upcoming fight with Macklin, “What do you think?” he replied with a huge smile. “It will be an exciting fight I want to make a statement to show you all who GGG is!”
