Super middleweight Jesus “El Martillo” Gonzales continued his comeback with a twelve round unanimous decision victory over Jeff Lacy conqueror Dhafir Smith at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, AZ. Gonzales dominated each round and could not miss with straight left hand. With the victory, the southpaw captured the vacant IBF North American Super Middleweight title and improved his record to (26-1, 14 KOs) while Smith’s record falls to (24-20-7, 7 KOs). Scores were (119-108 and 118-109 twice).
In other action, welterweight Ricky Duenas of El Monte, CA defeated local Phoenix fighter Eddie Brooks via majority decision. Brooks (9-3) rallied late, but could not overcome the early success of Duenas (7-1) who piled up the points. Scores were (58-56 twice, 57-57)
Cruiserweights Billy Schmidt (1-0-1) and Carlos Reyes (4-3-1) both showed a lot of grit in a wild four round slug fest. However, with each fighter taking two rounds a piece, judges ruled the contest a draw with scores of 38-38 across the board.
Junior middleweight Janks Trotter (4-0-1) and Arturo Crespin (6-1-1) engaged in a bloody, foul filled contest which ended in a technical draw after referee Tony Zaino decided he had seen one too many head-butts from both fighters.
In a lackluster battle in which very few punches landed cleanly, super middleweight Roberto Young (1-2) earned his first win defeating Nelson Lopez (1-1). All judges scored the contest (39-37).
