Gonzalez-Rojas presser

By Gabriel F. Cordero

In a crowded media press conference for Mexican and International media, world champions Elio Rojas and Jhonny Gonzalez declared are ready to fight on Saturday at the Grand Oasis Cancun Arena for the WBC world featherweight title.

Jhonny Gonzalez: “I feel good for this fight. I’m the champion now. I won it in Japan and have made three defenses. I hope Rojas stands and fights and give a great fight for the good of boxing. Rojas came to Mexico, but I would have gone anywhere to fight and defend my crown. It’s time to prove myself ready for great things in this division.”

Elio Rojas: “I came here to get my belt. After an injury to my right hand [the title] went into the hands of the Japanese Hasegawa and now in the hands of Gonzalez. I am a great fighter and trained very hard for this fight. I feel good, I’m focused and will fight every minute like it was the first of the fight. I am sure to return to the Dominican Republic with my world title.”

In the other title fight, IBF super featherweight champ Juan Carlos Salgado said “Im not the same. I’m trying to change many items around my life and boxing style. We need to win this fight to seek more opportunities with good champions and better fights. Honorio will not stop my plans and goals. ¨

Some feel the Oasis Cancun Grand Arena has the potential to become an alternative to large venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York City and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world and has all the resources to hold big boxing events.

The event is organized by the Promociones del Pueblo, Pepe Gomez and Grupo Modelo and Televisa will be broadcast to Mexico, the U.S. and Japan.

For 18 years, Fightnews.com® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
