Jhonny Gonzalez (45-7, 39 KOs) not only hopes to get a shot at the winner of October’s Juan Manuel Lopez-Rafael Marquez fight, but vows to follow in the footsteps of fellow countryman Marco Antonio Barrera when he takes on Jackson Asiku (26-3, 14 KOs) Sept. 15 at the Hilton in Las Vegas. Gonzalez and Asiku will fight for the IBO featherweight title – the same belt that was at stake when Barrera fought, and defeated, Prince Naseem Hamed in 2001. “All the Mexicans will be supporting me when I fight in Las Vegas during Mexican Independence Week,” says Gonzalez. The card is promoted by Roy Englebrecht Promotions and Promociones del Pueblo. The card’s co-main features Juan Carlos Salgado (22-1-1, 16 KOs), who will fight for the IBO 122-pound belt against Daniel Jimenez (19-3-1, 11 KOs), of Puerto Rico.
