Boxing was back in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California as Goossen Tutor Promotions presented “Live at the Lodge.” 2008 U.S. Olympian Shawn Estrada (15-0, 13 KOs) of East Los Angeles scored a second round TKO over previously undefeated Felix Piedra (8-1-1, 5 KOs) in the main event. “Shawn is a great example of what you need to do in a place like the Sportsmen’s Lodge,” promoter Dan Goossen told Fightnews.com. “It’s an arena for up-and-coming fighters that are striving to get up to that HBO and Showtime level.” This was the second installment of Live at the Lodge.
In the 80s and 90s, Goossen had a successful run at a similar venue where he built fighters into primetime attractions, “At the old Country Club in Reseda that we ran for 12 years, we developed stars like Michael Nunn, Gabriel and Rafael Ruelas, Orlin and Terry Norris,” said Dan, who promoted under the Ten Goose Boxing name in those days. “The plans have not changed with building young talent into world champions we are going to continue to do that which is why we decided to go back to our roots. You need these platforms to build that young talent and reach out to other networks.” Goossen Tutor Promotions is scheduled to return to the Sportsmen’s Lodge in November.
