IBO Cruiserweight Champion Danny Green has been cleared of any wrongdoing following his controversial 29 second knockout of Paul Briggs at Challenge Stadium Perth on July 21, 2010. An inquiry from the West Australian Professional Combat Sports Commission WA cleared Green, but found Briggs participated in a ‘sham contest’ for not disclosing his ‘nervous system’ health condition prior to the fight. The WA Professional Combat Sports Commission has ordered Briggs to pay $75,000 AUD to the commission from his $200,000 AUD purse, and his registration as a boxer in Western Australia has been cancelled.
Briggs’ trainer, Billy Hussein, was also found to have participated in a sham contest, finding that he ”reasonably to have known Briggs was not in any condition to be able to genuinely participate in a contest and his ability to engage in a genuine contest and mount a credible defense”.
If Hussein applies to register as a trainer in Western Australia in the future, his application will likely to be declined.
Briggs and Hussein are both likely to appeal the decision handed down today.
Hussein is the trainer of fighters in WA, including Perth based current female world champion Erin McGowan.
