Danny Green fresh from scoring the biggest upset in 2009 when he stopped boxing legend Roy Jones Jr in one round at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia on December 2nd has now entereted negotiations to fight future hall of famer Bernard Hopkins in 2010. Green talks to Fightnews and tells how has top USA promoter Gary Shaw assisting him in negotiations and how he regards his own team of Justin Manolikos and Angelo Hyder as the best in the boxing business.
“It was a big thrill being at the negotiating table with Gary Shaw and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy and my trusted wingman and trainer Angelo Hyder,” said Green. “The issue at hand was securing a deal for me to fight the pound for pound warrior Bernard Hopkins. Gary Shaw is my good friend – Vic Darchinyan’s promoter, whom I was watching destroy Rojas in two rounds to retain his WBC and WBA world titles. Vic’s manager and also my good friend – Elias “Hella” Nasser, recommended that I would be wise to involve Gary in the negotiations which would involve in securing US TV.
“My promoter, Green Machine Boxing, and my manager and close lifelong friend – Justin Manolikos are without doubt the most professional and successful team in Australia, bar none. Roy Jones’ camp told Justin and Mick Pemberi (GMB CEO) it was the best show they had ever witnessed, apart from the result.
“We know how to promote anywhere in the world but TV in the States is the one area where from a big hitter like Gary Shaw would be invaluable. His prowess at the negotiating table is legendary and it proved a very good move in having Gary there to prevent entering into a deal without knowing what revenue would be accessible from TV. Gary is working around the clock to make this happen.
“It’s early days yet – but make no mistake, as my destruction of Roy Jones in one round, I bring the thunder from down under, and my fists are employed to destroy. I fight to please everyone but my opponents, and it would be fantastic for the people in America to get a taste of what I do, in against a legend like Bernard Hopkins. It is a pleasure being associated with quality people like Gary Shaw, his experience and his presence is top notch.”
