In one of the great performances of modern times, UFC world welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre beat and battered lightweight champion BJ Penn for four rounds until the fight was stopped before the start of round five. In round one, the larger St. Pierre held Penn against the cage and landed short punches. Round two saw St. Pierre takeover the fight completely however as he landed heavy strikes from the top position. The beating from the much larger and much stronger St. Pierre continued until the corner of Penn decided they had seen enough. The fight was waved off before the start of round five giving Georges St. Pierre the TKO victory.

In the co-main, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida staked his claim as the number one contender for the UFC light heavyweight title by knocking out fellow unbeaten Thiago Silva with less than a second left in round one. At 4:59, Machida threw Silva to the ground and landed a heavy right hand just before the buzzer. Silva lay stiffened, clearly unable to continue.

For 18 years, Fightnews.com® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
