Guerrero: I wanted to punish him

By Miguel Maravilla

“I want to thank God for blessing me with this win,” WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero said at the post fight press conference following his exciting and gutsy unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. “I went out there went to work, did my thing. Berto is a tough guy but I came out with the victory.”

“I hurt him, I put him down, went to the body a lot to slow him down. I did say that I wanted to beat him for twelve rounds,” The Ghost told “My father wanted me to box him more, to use my jab, but I wanted to punish him. I wanted to grind it out. He said he was going to execute me. I told him I was going to give him a beating.”

Guerrero even continued his assault after the final bell. “I was going. I didn’t even hear the bell. I was excited he was landing big shots. I told him I love this!”

After this impressive performance, Team Guerrero will focus on a potential showdown with Floyd Mayweather.

“He made it clear to me there is only one guy he wants and that’s Floyd Mayweather,” Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said. “Robert and I are like a tag team. He did his job tonight. It’s up to me now to deliver and put together that pound for pound showdown.”

Berto did not make the post-press conference.

Also at the post fight press conference was Keith “One Time” Thurman (19-0, 18 KOs) who scored an impressive KO over former world champion Carlos “Indio” Quintana.

“I want to thank God for this victory. This is a dream come true. I am happy to be performing and giving you exciting fights. I am here to fight. Anyone in the world of boxing can get some of Keith Thurman. I am looking forward to 2013 coming back on HBO.”

“I was breaking him down and got him early with the body shots. I give myself an A or B. There are many fights to come for Keith “One Time” Thurman. Watching tape on Quintana fighting Cotto, I knew the man don’t like body shots,” Thurman told

“I really want to be at 147. You seen what I could do with 10 ounce gloves imagine what I can do with eight ounce gloves. I want Timothy Bradley or Paulie Malignaggi but I will go to where the world of boxing takes me.”
