Fightnews.com had a short conversation with the Panamanian WBA cruiserweight world champion in recess Guillermo Jones about exactly what happened Friday night in Moscow, Russia. Jones was supposed to fight local hero and WBA cruiserweight world champion Denis Lebedev in a rematch. However, with both fighters in the dressing room, the fight was abruptly called off due to news of Jones’ failed prefight drug test.
“All I can say is I’m not understanding what it is they’re accusing me of and I will always be clean,” stated Jones. “The Russians were afraid and that’s why they didn’t want to fight. They were sure I was going to win and by knockout. We don’t know what the Russians are inventing or are doing, but they’re dishonest. I took the tests but copies of the results weren’t given to us.”
When questioned Jones about the status of B simple, Jones responded that the decision is in the hands of Don King.
According to WBA VP Gilberto Jesus Mendoza from Russia, “At this point Guillermo Jones’ fate is on sample B. His representative must challenge the findings by Swiss Lab.”
After a positive test, a fighter has the option of requesting that the B sample be tested and wait for the new result. Both parties were duly notified the decision.
