The first ever IBF Caribbean welterweight championship will take place on Friday between Joan Guzman (30-0-1, 17 KOs) and Florencio Castellano (17-4, 13 KOs) at the Jaragua Hotel and Casino in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The card titled “The Return of the Champion” marks the highly anticipated return to the ring of two-time world champion Joan Guzman. IBF President Daryl Peoples, who is slated to attend the show, noted, “It is exciting that Joan Guzman agreed to fight the inaugural bout for our new Caribbean Title.” IBF female super featherweight champion Amanda Serrano will also be fighting on the card.
Earlier this year, Peoples visited the Dominican Republic to explore the opportunities for the organization’s development there. Peoples met with Minister of Sports, Felipe Payano; Boxing Commissioner, Franklin Núñez; and with several boxing officials, local promoters and boxers. All were enthusiastic and expressed a great willingness to work with the organization. “This event has come into fruition as a result of these meetings in the Dominican Republic this past April. We are very pleased to finally see this event take place and look forward to seeing more IBF activity in the Dominican Republic,” stated Peoples.
Throughout this year the organization has seen a considerable amount of activity in Latin America and with its Latino Title. “We frequently receive inquiries from Latin American countries about our regional titles and realized that we may serve the region better if we had more than one regional title for all of Latin America,” noted Peoples. As a result, the IBF Caribbean title was born and is the first for possibly more IBF regional titles for Latin America.
