Gwayana making fifth defense

By Ron Jackson

South African junior flyweight champion Mfundo Gwayana makes the fifth defence of his title when faces former champion Sizwe Sinyabi on Saturday at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in Port Elizabeth. This is a rematch after their closely fought draw at the Orient Theatre in East London in June last year. Sinyabi (18-8-2, 9 KOs) has been inactive since then, whereas Gwayana (11-3-1, 6 KOs) made a successful title defence in October 2009 against Thabo Sishwane whom he stopped in the tenth round.

Both fighters hail from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, but Sinyabi is now based in Gauteng and trained by Nick Durandt while Gwayana is trained by former IBF junior featherweight champion Vuyani Bungu,

Gwayana won the vacant title in November 2007 and has made successful defences against Samoro Msophi, Motswaki Moselesele, Sinyabi and Sishwane.

Sinyabi won the SA junior flyweight title in October 2004 when he outpointed Vuyani Kheswa and after making a successful defence against Thembelani Maphuma he lost it to Muvuhso Nedzanani in February 2005.

The tournament is presented by Gladys Tsenene of Rainbow Promotions.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
