Mfundo Gwayana retained his South African junior flyweight title against Sizwe Sinyabi with a 12 round draw on Sunday afternoon at the Orient Theatre in East London. This fight was presented by Mzi Mnguni of Eyethu Promotions. In a poor fight where there was more holding and wrestling than boxing the 26-year-old Gwayana (48.90kg) was possibly a shade fortunate to retain his title as Sinyabi (48.90kg) came on strong in the final rounds and scored a knockdown in round twelve. However, in a fight where some of the rounds were difficult to score because of the pushing and holding by both fighters one cannot really fault the judges. Judge Mbini scored 115-113 for Gwayana and judge Vabaza saw it 114-113 for Sinyabi, whilst judge Matika had it 114-114. The champion who was cut over the left eye in the sixth round appeared stronger in the earlier rounds and possibly the challenger left it too late even though he had Gwayana down with a big left hook in the 12th round who was forced to take a count from referee Lulama Mtya. Gwayana takes his record to 18-8-2; 9 and Gwayana goes to 10-3-1; 5.
