Mfundo Gwayana won the South African junior flyweight title on a fifth round technical decision over defending champion Bongani Silila at the Nedevana Hall near King Williamstown on Sunday afternoon. Gwayana suffered a bad cut on his forehead after an accidental clash of heads in the fourth round and referee Lulama Mtya stopped the fight in the fifth round on advice from the ringside doctor. The bout then went to the scorecards in terms of the rules as four rounds had been completed. Two judges scored it 40-36 and the third 39-37 all in favour of Gwayana. In an untidy affair Silila (12-4-2, 8 KOs) spent most of the fight circling around the ring and holding when coming in close. Gwayana (17-6-3, 8 KOs) gained some sort of revenge after losing on a first round stoppage against Silila in September last year for the interim SA junior flyweight title.
