In a blatant hometown decision South Africa’s Nkqubela Gwazela beat Nick Otieno from Kenya on a ten round majority points decision in a bantamweight contest at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday night. Judges Simphiwe Mibini and Allen Matakane scored it 96-95 and 97-95 for Gwazela and judge Andile Matike had it 96-96.
Otieno (52.95 kg) was the aggressor throughout as he outboxed the 30-year-old Gwazela (53.50 kg) to pile up the points with his educated left jab and fast combinations and appeared to have won the fight comfortably.
Otieno, 33, whose record dropped to 19-4, with 8 knockouts boxed from behind a tight defence and using his superior ring craft and hand speed was in control throughout as he jolted Gwazela’s head back on occasions.
Gwazela 19-6; 14 who fought with a badly cut lip from about round seven threw numerous low blows but was only received two warnings from referee Siya Vabaza in round five.
