Hamdan defeats Pawsey

Former world ranked middleweight Nader “Lionheart” Hamdan (42-9-1, 18 KOs) outscored WBO #10 super middleweight Daniel “Condo Crusher” Pawsey (13-4, 8 KOs) in a closely contested crowd pleasing contest over twelve rounds on Friday at the Orion Function Centre, Campsie, New South Wales, Australia in a nationally televised promotion. Hamdan was aggresive and connected with effective head and body shots in the early rounds but he was met with stiff resistance by Pawsey who picked up the pace midway into the contest. Pawsey connected with a right hand bomb to the head in round six but Hamdan came back well at the bell.
Round nine was a see-saw round as both boxers scored well with solid shots that had them on unsteady legs. Round twelve had both boxers standing toe to toe exchanging bombs for three minutes until the bell sounded. Scores were Ray Reed 118-110; Bernie McMahon 115-113; Gary Dean 119-112. Hamdan is a former Australian champion and has clashed with the cream of the crop in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions including Arthur Abraham and Anthony Mundine.
In a supporting featherweight bout Billel Dib (3-0, 2 KOs) outscored former amateur star Luke “Cool Hand” Norton (2-2) over six rounds. Norton boxed skillfully against the heavy handed Dib who always looked dangerous. Norton never took a backward step despite his opponents superior power and made him work for every point. At the end of six action rounds scores were Ray Reed 60-54; Gary Dean 60-54; Bernie McMahon 59-55. Norton is trained by former IBF world champion Gairy St Clair.
Light heavyweight Michael Van Nimwegen (5-1, 2 KOs) was impressive as he outscored veteran Joel Bourke (14-20-2, 7 KOs) over six rounds. Both boxers punched chips off each other from the opening bell that had the fans in attendance cheering. Bourke was warned in round four by referee Gary Dean for use of the head. Nimwegen scored with the cleaner punches but Bourke was effective on the inside. In round six Nimwegen dominated Bourke as he connected with accurate combinations to the head. Scores: Ray Reed 58-56; Brian McMahon 60-54; Bernie McMahon 59-53. Bourke holds wins over Porky Lovett and Ben Crampton but lost to world champion Danny Green and Sakio Bika.Van Nimwegen is trained by David Birchell.
Aboriginal 154 pounder Sam Leone (3-5-1) was warned twice in round one for infringements by referee Gary Dean in his six round contest against Anthony Brownlie (6-4-1, 1 KO). The referee deducted a point from Leone in round two for continual holding. Brownlie came to fight and had Leone on the bike in all the rounds as he connected with solid head and body shots. In round five Brownlie staggered Leone with a right hand bomb who was given a standing eight count. At the conclusion of six Brownlie was awarded the decision by scores of Brian McMahon 59-53; Ray Reed 58-55; Bernie McMahon 59-53.
Bradley Viegal (0-0-1) boxed a four round draw with former amateur star Ibrahim Yaghmour (0-0-1) at middleweight poundage. Viegal was the aggressor in all the rounds but Yagmour scored with effective long range combinations. Viegel is trained by Brad Gallagher and Yagmour is trained by Billy Hussein. Scores: Ray Reed 38-38; Gary Dean 39-39; Bernie McMahon 39-39.
