Henderson defeats Varner

After two competitive rounds, interim WEC lightweight champion Ben “Smooth” Henderson utilized a flying guillotine to surprise and submit titlist Jamie Varner in the third period making him the unified lightweight champion of the world. Varner controlled the first round by pressing Henderson into the cage and controlling the pace of the fight. Round two witnessed Henderson create space and slam hard kicks to the head and body of Varner. The third round saw Varner continue to implement his wrestling strategy until, after a throwing a hard knee, Henderson leapt onto the neck of Varner. With a tight guillotine in place Varner tapped suddenly giving Henderson the submission victory at 2:41.

Returning to action after surgically repairing two broken hands, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber put on one of the best performances of his storied career by submitting world class jiu jitsu black belt Raphael Assuncao with a rear naked choke at 3:49 of the third round. With this win Faber moves into the top spot to next challenge current featherweight title holder Jose Aldo, Jr.

Lightweight wrestling standout Kamal Shalorus used strong takedown defense and wild boxing to defeat Dave Jansen via unanimous decision. Scorecards read 30-27 twice and 29-28.

Former world featherweight champion Mike Brown returned to his winning ways by submitting WEC newcomer Anthony Morrison with a rear naked choke in just 1:54.

Featherweight Deividas Taurosevicius battled Mackens Semerzier for three hard rounds before scoring a three round unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 29-28.

Bantamweight Charlie Valencia won a grueling three round split decision over Akitoshi Tamura. Scores read 29-28 twice in favor of Valencia and 29-28 for Tamura. Featherweight Wagney Fabiano soundly defeated Clint Godfrey en route to a three round decision. All three judges scored the bout 30-27. Veteran striker Mark Hominick impressively submitted Bryan Caraway with a slick armbar at 3:48 of the opening round. Eddie Wineland outworked George Roop over three rounds to win a unanimous decision victory. All three scorecards read the same, 30-27. Will Campuzano defeated Coty Wheeler by unanimous decision. Scorecards read 30-26 and 30-27 twice.
